'Making a Murderer': Steven Avery's sons speak out for first time

For the first time since the popular Netflix true-crime documentary series Making a Murderer premiered, Steven Avery's twin boys are publicly talking about about their father and his fate.

In clips shared with People, Bill and Steven Jr. spoke with Crime Watch Daily; their opinions on whether their father is in fact a killer differs.

"No, I don't think he did [it]," said Bill, while Steven Jr. said he is not sure.

"I mean, only one person can answer that and that is Teresa [Halbach]. But she can't answer it no more," Steven Jr. said. "The only thing I know is that the entire case was very shady. It's clear that there was corruption."

Their father served 18 years in prison for a sexual assault conviction out of Manitowoc County, Wis., for which he was exonerated by DNA evidence in 2003. Then in 2005, Avery was convicted of the murder of 25-year-old Halbach. Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, was also convicted for the same murder. Dassey's lawyers argued his confession to authorities was coerced.

Steven Jr. said both men "deserve a fair trial. If they're guilty, let them sit. But if they're innocent, get them out."

Since premiering in December, the series has made headlines and almost everyone involved in front of and behind the camera has done at least one interview with other media outlets. All that attention focused on the family has not been easy, Steven Jr. said.

"It sucks having everything out in the open like that," Steven Jr. said. "At the same point, it's good because a lot of people see a little bit of a bigger picture."
