The best and worst moments of the 2016 Golden Globes

Sunday evening's 2016 Golden Globes were full of surprises, with enough upsets to completely torpedo your office pool.

In between shocking winners (the best awards show treat of all!), viewers were treated to an emotional Lady Gaga (Hooray!), as well as a disappointing host in Ricky Gervais. All the while, the dresses were excellent, the champagne was clearly free-flowing, and Jennifer Lawrence was just as charming as one would expect.

Check out just a few of the best and worst moments from the evening below.

Worst: Ricky Gervais' Transphobic Jokes
Ricky Gervais' "I'm so bad" shtick is tired -- and what was with all the transgender "jokes"? Surely a comedian responsible for The Office can think of something funnier. While some of his edgy remarks certainly landed (as long as your name isn't Ben Affleck or Mel Gibson), his repeated transphobic comments were a real disappointment.

Best: Unexpected Winners
Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) and other unexpected winners made the actual envelope-opening moments fairly exciting, while on the movies side, a surprise win for The Revenant means the Oscar race continues to be one of the most wide-open in years.

Best: Rachel Bloom's Win
Rachel Bloom's excited, spirited acceptance speech for her role in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was the first delightful moment of the night. Definitely considered an underdog going into the evening, Bloom recounted all the rejection the show received before finally making it to air on the CW. The fact that the win probably guarantees the show a second season means it's the perfect time for viewers to catch up -- it's definitely worth it.

Worst: Jamie Foxx's Fake Announcement
Should Straight Outta Compton have been nominated? Sure. But joke announcing it as the winner took away from the other, real nominees. Not cool.

Best: Standing Ovation for Sylvester Stallone
"I'm going to try not to get emotional," Stallone began. "Last time I was here was 1977...;and the view is so beautiful now." Before emotionally thanking his family he concluded, "I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had." And for those at home who was disappointed Stallone didn't thank Creed director Ryan Coogler, apparently he came back onstage and did -- TV just didn't show it.

Worst: All the bleeping
Leave something for people at home to watch - or allow an R-rated livestream.

Best: Aziz Ansari's Nomination Shot
Taking a cue from his former co-star/prank lover Amy Poehler, during his nomination shot Ansari was shown reading a book titled, Losing to Jeffrey Tambor with (Bleeping) Dignity. It was a super funny split-second -- but shockingly, while the smart money was on Tambor, the award for best actor in a comedy series wound up going to Gael Garcia Bernal.

Worst: Taraji P. Henson Getting Played Off
Give Cookie a moment. Related: Later in the show, Ridley Scott also waved off attempts to play him off. When you directed Alien, you can do whatever you want.

Best: Lady Gaga's Earnest, Emotional Speech
"I feel like Cher in that John Patrick Shanley film Moonstruck right now, this is one of the greatest moments of my life," she said onstage, thanking American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy and the cast. "You're my family forever. ... Because of you, I was able to shine, I guess. So thank you for sharing your talent with me. I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first." Bonus: Whatever this was.

Best: Standing Ovation for Leo
Leonardo DiCaprio has won Golden Globes before, but the standing ovation given to him following his win for The Revenant means Oscar glory might finally be his, right? Also, DiCaprio can always be counted on for a coherent speech. As goofy as this all is (and awards shows are extremely silly), it's also nice to simply be serious occasionally. Side note: Is it too much to ask for the Award Show Gods (or just an on-the-ball photographer) to give us a picture of DiCaprio next to fellow winner Kate Winslet?
