Lyft Offered Free DeLorean Rides For BTTF Day

We know what we're doing at 4:29 p.m. on Wednesday: going back to the future. Back to the Future Part II, that is. In honor of Marty McFly and his time travel trip to October 21, 2015 in the classic 1989 sequel, Lyft, Verizon, and Universal are teaming up to give New Yorkers free DeLorean rides. The date marks the moment Doc Brown and McFly visit Hill Valley, California via time-travel, taking McFly's girlfriend to 2015 to help their future children.

The promotion will last from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Manhattan on Wednesday, October 21 and can be requested by selecting "McFly Mode" on the Lyft app, available on both iPhones and Androids. On normal days, Lyft drivers in the area show up with a simple black car icon, DeLoreans have their own icon, complete with open butterfly car door and purple lightening. The free ride only lasts up to 15 minutes and has to stay under 88 mph, but we'll take what we can get since hoverboards aren't quite perfected yet. While Lyft has not shared specific details on just how many DeLoreans will be in the city, the vertically-opening cars are allegedly being shipped in from all across the country.

This isn't the first time that a ride-sharing app has lured users with these distinctive cars. In 2013, Uber and General Electric also offered DeLorean rides in San Francisco, but now east coasters will have their chance. You will need to supply your own flux capacitator, though.
