What exactly is an Amiibo and what do you do with it?

By now you've probably been inundated with news and information about Nintendo's toy series known as Amiibo, which can be used in games lie Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, and more. Aside from looking really awesome, you can use them in-game to do all sorts of special things, like leveling them up in Smash to become pivotal characters, or outfitting your Mario Kart Miis with the same outfits your toys are wearing.
