Toys 'R' Us to Hire 45,000 Employees for Holiday Rush
This holiday season, we're set to see the biggest seasonal hiring rush since 1999, with retailers and shipping companies adding a projected 800,000 jobs. Kohl's alone is planning 67,000 seasonal hires, and now Toys "R" Us has announced that it will add 45,000 employees to work the holiday months--the same number it hired last year.
"Ensuring we are fully staffed with knowledgeable employees is integral as we look to fulfill our customers' needs whenever, wherever and however they choose to shop," a spokeswoman told CNBC.
Like Kohl's, toy retailer will be hiring at both store locations and distribution centers, a move that suggests the increasing prevalence of online shopping over brick-and-mortar stores. Seasonal employees can expect to work between 16 and 20 hours a week, with the possibility of continuing year-round after the holidays (Toys "R" Us retained 20 percent of seasonal hires last year). In-store positions include sales associates, stock crew, and department mangers.
By the time the hiring is complete, the company will have more than doubled its workforce.
Other retailers, including J.C. Penney and Target, have said that they will maintain 2013's hiring figures this year. Walmart will make a 10 percent jump, with a planned 60,000 hires. Shipping companies, like UPS and FedEx, are also making large-scale hires to handle the holiday surge.
"Ensuring we are fully staffed with knowledgeable employees is integral as we look to assist customers in crossing off items on their children's wish lists," Toys "R" Us's Mark Eberly, Vice President of Human Resources, said in a statement.
