Holiday Hiring Roundup: Companies to Add More Than 800,000 Jobs By December


Holiday hiring is expected to reach heights not since since the dot-com boom of 1999, with retailers and shipping companies potentially adding more than 800,000 seasonal workers from October through December.

It marks a continuing upward trend in seasonal hiring, which has risen every year since a 55 percent drop in 2008. In 2013, companies added 786,200 workers during the holiday season. This year, with UPS and FedEx projecting large-scale hirings, reveals the influence of online shopping on the seasonal job market.UPS plans to add 90,000 to 95,000 employees during the final three months of the year "to handle [an] anticipated e-commerce-driven holiday delivery surge," CNBC reported. FedEx, the nation's second-largest carrier, plans to hire more than 50,000 employees, many of which will be able to continue working after the holidays.

Retailers will also take part in the hiring frenzy despite the prevalence of online shopping over brick-and-mortar stores (last year Target cut seasonal hires by 20 percent). Kohl's says it will hire 67,000 workers for the holiday season, a third more than the 50,000 they added in 2013. Many of these jobs are located in the company's distribution centers, although the Associated Press reported that the retailer also plans to hire an average 50 associates per store.

"The last two years saw holiday hiring return to prerecession levels," John A. Challenger, CEO of the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas told CNBC. "This year, we could see hiring return to levels not seen since the height of the boom."

The firm noted that Amazon, Macy's, and Wal-Mart will likely also make major seasonal hires to keep up with demand.
