Job Descriptions Decoded: Childcare Assistant Teacher
Might you be interested in a job working with children? No matter what job interests you, when you apply online, are you making sure to hit on all the key areas the employer wants to see? Today's decoded job description is for an educator in a childcare setting.
Assuming you have some experience in a daycare, preschool or childcare setting, all of the items listed in the job summary should be pretty easy for you to address. Be sure you use all of the language that the description employs. In other words, don't just list activities you planned, or that you planned activities for children. Make a point to tie the activities to their social, physical and intellectual growth. Listing this "growth" as your result in a resume bullet point will be very helpful to your application. For example:
Researched and organized activities specifically designed to stimulate fine motor skills. Parents and co-teachers were impressed by how much students improved their pincer grasp after implementing these exercises.
Of course, no job involving children fails to mention skills relating to how well you communicate with their parents. Make a point to incorporate this into your resume. It can be especially useful to include comments from parents in your document. It would be even better if you have LinkedIn recommendations from some parents whose children you had in previous classes. For example, in your resume, you could say:
Received excellent feedback from parents of students in class as well as supervisors regarding accurate, complete and interesting newsletters and online documentation provided each day.
Organizational skills are always important for any job, but since this is a position in a teaching environment, be sure to quantify your skills in that setting. For example:
Maintain records of student development and accurately track milestones, resulting in school being able to demonstrate classwork's impact on children.
Since you don't necessarily already know this organization's policies, be sure to indicate your familiarity with government regulations as they pertain to working with children. You may also want to incorporate a bullet point describing how well you adapt to new environments. For example:
Quickly learned policies and procedures in new position to keep children safe and educate them to their potential.
Since you likely have some educational background, make sure to show it off here. If there are specific theories of early childhood learning you know about, or have studied, be sure to describe them.
Organizational, communication and customer service skills are also very common on most job requirements. Don't miss the chance to make some key points about these items in your resume.
This is a little different from the requirement to communicate – this is your opportunity to indicate how responsive you are to your "customers," including parents and children. Has someone said you're exceptionally responsive? Include it on your resume:
Noted by parents and supervisors as being exceptionally responsive to parent needs. Especially commended by parents of special needs children for ability to provide details to help plan their educational menus.
Safety first! Make sure to include mentions of your ability to adhere to safety protocals. If you've had a hand in designing a safe environment, all the better.
Coordinating is a great skill to feature. How well do you work with peers and teammates? How about supervisors? Be sure to indicate how easily you incorporate into a new setting and how much everyone enjoys having you around.
If you don't have these requirements, don't bother applying online. You'll be better off trying to network your way into a job if you do not meet the basic qualifications; the computer will screen you out immediately if you do not.
