E3 2014: Nintendo focuses on the fun

While PS4 and Xbox One battle it out for technical supremacy, Nintendo seems content to let everyone know that they're all about the fun factor when it comes to video games.

Although the Wii U has struggled to gain a foothold compared to its competitors, games like the just-released Mario Kart 8 show that the house of Mario has a lot of tricks up its sleeve. Nintendo's E3 2014 showcase makes it clear that Nintendo is ready to give Wii U another significant push with a bunch of great looking games coming out over the next year and change.

Nintendo's E3 2014 digital event kicked off with another look at Super Smash Bros., this time with added characters like Mii fighters (now you can try and fight Mario, Link, and others as yourself) and a brand-new line of toys called Amiibo.

The Amiibo toys work similar to Skylanders games, where you will place a toy on your Gamepad controller, and that toy will "enter" the game, complete with its own set of stats. Nintendo also hinted that these figures will make it to other games in development, and even games that are out now (like the aforementioned Mario Kart 8).

Gamers also got a glimpse of the new The Legend of Zelda Wii U game, a game called Mario Maker that will allow you to design your very own Super Mario Bros. levels, and even a glimpse at Star Fox Wii U, introduced by none other than Mario-creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
