Ask Jack: Beating Stress, Facebook Likes, and Job of the Week

An AOL Jobs reader asks:

What's an effective way to handle stress at work, so that I can remain calm when I have multiple tasks to complete at once and when I'm not sure how to do some of those tasks due to new technology that I'm still trying to learn?

Hmm, do you live in either Colorado or Washington? (Actually, most employers frown at on-the-job narcotic use.) You describe a not-at-all uncommon situation for the modern worker. Each of us are being asked to do more and more tasks in the same short amount of time, and just when we've mastered technology that supposedly makes our jobs much easier, here comes version 2.0. I'm getting stressed out just thinking about your question!!

On the tech front, don't be a hero and try to figure everything out on your own. There always seems to be some whippersnapper whiz-kid around who will walk you through it, 18 times if needed. As for your multiple duties, as corny as it might seem, a "to-do" list can be very effective. Your stress will drop each time you cross off a completed activity. And talk to other people with the same job. Are they feeling totally stressed out too? Then maybe there actually is too much work. Go to a supervisor as a unified front -- it can make a difference.

One last thing regarding stress: If you're not a doctor or first responder,try to relax a little bit -- you're not doing life-or-death stuff, I promise.

How do you get your friends to like your work Facebook page?

First of all, I think we should all practice our Facebook skills right now by sharing this page. There, now you've got the hang of it. Still feeling uncomfortable? Then try clicking that Twitter button too!

OK, enough blatant self-promotion. When you're in charge of a Facebook page because you own a business or handle a company's social-media efforts, it's easy to feel like Sally Field at the 1985 Academy Awards: "You like me!" But when our own friends don't "like" our pages, it's hard not to take it personally.

I assume you've tried the standard way to invite people: First go to your page, and make sure you're using Facebook as yourself, not as the page. Click "Build Audience" at the top, then "Invite Friends...", and make sure "Search All Friends" is selected. Now invite whomever you want.

Some friends will need a little more pushing -- a bit more of a personal appeal. You can post your link on your timeline, explaining why it's important to you, and what sort of information they'll find on the page. But people often miss our individual timeline posts, so consider sending the link to friends in an e-mail. Do NOT send it in a multi-person Facebook message. This is a huge pet peeve: Someone in the thread makes a boneheaded reply and then everybody gets a notification about it, then some other wiseguy wants to join the fun and also replies so everyone gets another notification, and soon people start "leaving the conversation".... It's very annoying, and not a great launching pad for engendering loyalty to your company!

Even if your friends never "like" your business on Facebook, they might still like it in real life. And never count out the power of old fashioned word-of-mouth.
