Aldon Smith or Random Twitter User: Which Alleged Airplane-Bomb Threat Maker Had the Worst Sunday?

Super Bowl Football

On Sunday, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after allegedly telling a TSA agent that he had a bomb. In a separate incident earlier in the day, now former Twitter user @QueenDemetriax_ Tweeted to American Airlines that he was part of Al Qaida and on June 1 was "gonna do something really big."

Sunday was not a good day for either Smith or @QueenDemetriax_. Let's see who had it worse.

Aldon Smith's Sunday

According to the Associated Press:

The 24-year-old player was randomly selected for a secondary screening at Terminal 1 and became uncooperative with the process, airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said. She said he told a TSA agent that he had a bomb before walking to the gate. When airport police officers caught up with him, Ortiz said Smith became uncooperative and was taken into custody.

TMZ has video an onlooker at LAX shot of Smith being cuffed:

Smith was charged with making a false bomb threat and released later in the day after posting a $20,000 bail, reports. It was Smith's third recent arrest:
  • In September 2013, he was booked for suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession.
  • In November 2013, he pled not guilty to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a house party in June 2012.
TMZ, who's all over this case like Smith on a scrambling QB (ba-dum-ching), has video of Smith leaving the clink. Executive summary: he says nothing but looks a little grumpy.

@QueenDemetriax_'s Sunday

As for the Twitter user @QueenDemetriax_, supposedly a 14-year-old named Sarah, here's the Tweet in question (as the account is suspended, the original post is no longer accessible; but a screenshot @samir took of the exchange is):

While taking the threat seriously, American Airlines's since-deleted response overplayed its hand a bit: Gawker reports that "a Twitter spokesperson says the airline couldn't possibly have the information on her that it claims to have." Twitter, of course, likely has it (to say nothing of what the NSA might have).

While @QueenDemetriax_'s Twitter account is suspended, no reports of arrests have been made.

UPDATE April 14, 2:44 p.m. The 14-year-old girl has been arrested, USA Today reports (via @grantkmartin):

Police spokesman Roland Ekkers tells the news agency that the girl turned herself in to Rotterdam [Netherlands] police in and is now being interrogated. The girl, who was not identified, was with a parent when she turned herself.

Ekkers said the motive for the tweet is not yet known.

So whose Sunday was worse?

It depends (sorry for the cop-out).

On one hand, @QueenDemetriax_ is still at large, which is usually better than having been arrested and charged, as was the case with Smith. And, if @QueenDemetriax_ was savvy with masking the IP address, it's possible that'll always be the case. Also, it's possible her claim of someone hijacking her account was legit. As of now, her punishment is nothing more than a suspended Twitter account.

On one hand, @QueenDemetriax_ is a kid who'll probably get a lighter treatment from the courts for her stupidity than three-time arrestee Smith will get.

On the other hand, Smith's salary + bonus in 2014 = $4.5 million. So it's a good bet that he'll have better attorneys than @QueenDemetriax_ should she get arrested. And remember OJ?

Both of them, however, had a better Sunday than [SPOILER ALERT] Joffrey.
