comScore Releases January Smartphone Figures

Apple , Samsung , and Google continue to dominate their corners of the smartphone business. Industry tracker comScore has released its latest monthly data for the technology, indicating that those three firms are still the powers to be reckoned with in mobile.

In terms of top manufacturers, Apple took the top place with 41.6% of the market in January. This was one percentage point higher than at the end of October 2013. No. 2 Samsung also grew its share, to 26.7% from the 25.4% in the latter period. Rounding out the top five were LG, Motorola, and HTC, with shares of 6.9%, 6.4%, and 5.4%, respectively.

As for operating systems, the clear leader in January remained Google's Android, even though its market share dropped by half a percentage point over the preceding three months to land at 51.7% for January. The runner-up was Apple, which, similar to its hardware figures, advanced one percentage point during that time to take 41.6%. No. 3 Microsoft's share was unchanged at 3.2%, while Blackberry lost half a percentage point to end up at 3.1%. Taking the final position was Symbian, unchanged at 0.2%.
