This Month's New Movie Releases

New movie releases will find cold moviegoers ducking into the warmth of the local multiplex for some hot escapism. Let's go over some of February's new movie releases.

Feb. 7
It's going to be a busy start for this month's theatrical releases as three films that have been marketed aggressively in recent weeks -- The Lego Movie, Vampire Academy, and The Monuments Men -- all hit the silver screen.

Sony's The Monuments Men will have the most star power, as director George Clooney shares scenes with Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, and Bill Murray. The story is based on the actual group of art buffs who went into Germany during World War II to retrieve classic works of art before they were destroyed.

It's been 27 years since the original Robocop was released. A pair of sequels that followed failed to be as magnetic, so it seemed as if the sci-fi property of a partly robotic police officer in Detroit would merely live on as a cult classic. Well, Sony's giving the franchise a reboot. Can better special effects breathe new life into the property?

Does the updated RoboCop even say "Thank you for your cooperation" like the original? We'll find out.

Feb. 14
It's Valentine's Day, so it's only fitting that a few romance-inspired flicks -- About Last Night, Winter's Tale, and Endless Love -- hit theaters. Like a box of chocolates and a dozen roses, they'll all likely be gone within a week or two.

Feb. 21
Pompei is setting itself up as a potential sleeper hit with the potential to erupt. Cashing in on the success of Game of Thrones, it stars Kit Harrington -- Jon Snow in the HBO series -- in a similar role as a gladiator from the past.

Feb. 28
The action movies keep coming to close out the month with Non-Stop and Stalingrad as likely big draws heading into next month. Stalingrad follows RoboCop as an IMAX screening. An investment in IMAX remastering often indicates that the studio has big expectations for the film.

Either way, the final two weeks of new movie releases should clean the slate of the Valentine's Day premieres. Action has a funny way of chasing away love.

This will be bigger than the big screen
