3 New Hotel Openings: San Diego's Pier South Resort, Courtyard Philadelphia South at The Navy Yard, Croatia's Marina Botel
San Diego, California: Pier South Resort
A 20-minute drive from the Gaslamp District, almost all of the Pier South Resort's 78 suites offer 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean (it's unclear what the other suites offer views of -- safe to say though, it's not the Atlantic). Looking to do more than just veg on the beach and admire the view and eye candy (not that there's anything wrong with that)? Pier South offers cycling, hiking, surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and pier fishing. The resort's restaurant, SEA180º, serves Baja-Med--inspired cuisine like tuna takoshimi tacos. Suites start at $152.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Courtyard Philadelphia South at The Navy Yard
The 172-room Courtyard Philadelphia South at The Navy Yard marks the first hotel in that revitalized 1,200-acre neighborhood. With 1,800 square feet of meeting space, Internet access included with your stay and "sound engineered for quiet retreats," the hotel is geared towards business people meeting with the Navy Yard's start-up community. According to the press release, the hotel is also home to the only Starbucks open to the public within two miles (amazing that such a distinction is even possible in 2014 without being in international waters). Rates start at $139 a night.
Rijeka, Croatia: Marina Botel
Docked at Adamić Pier in the heart of Croatia's third largest city, the Marina Botel boasts that it's "the first Croatian boat hotel (although it's unclear what the difference is between a botel and a similar vessel, called a cruise ship). While the botel opened for business in November, the boat at its heart was built in 1936. Its 35 cabins sleep 112. Its restaurant offers traditional Croatian and Mediterranean cuisine will open soon. A bed in a dorm room starts at 99 kn ($18); single rooms start at 219 kn ($39).
