The All-American Road Trip to Break Your New Year's Resolutions
You stuffed yourself with food over the holidays and now you're committing to eating and living better. In 2014 you will be healthy! Or will you?
Already sick of those resolutions? Feel free to break them. We have the perfect road designed for you to do just that. From the Spam Museum to all-American barbecue, there are plenty of places across the country where you can break down and defy your good intentions.
1. Spam Museum – Austin, Minnesota
It's a whole museum where you can embrace this iconic dish: all you ever wanted to know about Spam and possibly even more. You can even chow down on a Spam burger. And, if you had another New Year's resolution to spend less money, you're in luck: admission is free.
2. Mickey's Diner – Saint Paul, Minnesota
Designed to resemble a dining car, Mickey's Diner is an iconic American diner, featured in the film "Mighty Ducks." And it's certainly the place to get your all-American meal to break every single resolution on your list. But don't worry, you can feel good about the fact that the kitchen works hard to use local ingredients. So get a juicy burger and top it all off with a malt and dream of simpler times.
3. Pasadena Cheeseburger Week – Pasadena, California
The cheeseburger is said to have been invented in Pasadena, and to celebrate, the city has its own week devoted to the food. From Jan. 12-17, 2014, you can go and eat as many cheeseburgers as you like and not be judged for it. Break your resolutions one burger at a time. For a classic Pasadena haunt check out Pie 'N Burger.
4. Dr. Pepper Museum – Waco, Texas
For those trying to avoid soft drinks in the New Year, this museum certainly isn't for you. The museum is known for its free samples –- hello Dr. Pepper sugar-induced high -- and while you're at it, you might as well get one of the handmade sodas at the fountain.
5. Ramen Burger – Brooklyn, New York
Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like: a burger that uses a bun made out of ramen noodles. Created by Keizo Shimamoto, you'll find it occasionally at Smorgasburg at the Brooklyn Flea Market in Williamsburg.
6. Nutella Bar – Chicago, Illinois
Be honest: whenever you have a Nutella jar in front of you, all you really want to do is eat the entire thing with a spoon? Well, rejoice, because there's now a Nutella bar in Chicago where you can eat as much Nutella as you like. Part of Mario Batali's 63,000 square foot new Eataly, at the Nutella bar you can get Nutella cannoli, crepes and more.
7. Cronut – New York City, New York
If you missed the Cronut in 2013, now is your chance. The hybrid croissant/doughnut created by Dominique Ansel spawned a worldwide trend. You now can get cronuts from Los Angeles to Singapore. But if you're up for breaking resolutions you might as well go all out and get the original.
8. Fatt Matt's Rib Shack – Atlanta, Georgia
No resolution breaking is complete without some authentic barbecue. At this Atlanta institution, you get barbecue and live music, which means at least you can attempt to dance your dinner off.
