The year is just about over, and smart taxpayers are already contemplating how they can get their refunds as quickly as possible. But in looking for information on how to file taxes in 2014, many people aren't aware of a little-known strategy that gives many taxpayers access to tax preparation help and electronic filing at little or no charge.

In the following video, Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool's director of investment planning, looks at the Free File Alliance program as one answer for how to file taxes in 2014. Dan notes that for those making income under a certain level -- $58,000 last year -- assistance is available at no cost. Moreover, even those earning above those limits can still use Free-File forms to prepare their own returns. Dan points out that a wide variety of preparation services participate in the program, including Intuit's TurboTax, H&R Block , Blucora's TaxAct, and the Liberty Tax service from JTH Holding .
