Discover Something New at Home in Miami

Graffiti entrance art in Wynwood Arts District of Miami, Florida, USA
Miss a minute in Miami and you miss a lot. The 305 scene is as dynamic and fast-paced as ever, with occupancy (and prices) in luxe oceanfront high-rises rising, the Dolphins' bullying scandal dominating the news and Trader Joe's first South Florida outpost drawing Two Buck Chuck devotees all the way south to Pinecrest.

New Restaurant: Cypress Room

Find good food for grown-ups in the Design District's compact and elegant 6-month-old Cypress Room. Dinner's not easy on the wallet (yep, that burger really is 24 bucks). Instead, swing by at lunch, when, for a dollar more, you'll savor succulent duck leg with polenta and mushrooms and the burger clocks in at a "reasonable" $16.

Place to Bring a Little "Home" Home with You: Las Tias

In November, upscale consignment store Las Tias moved to new digs in Coconut Grove. Happily, the inventory (think Le Corbusier chairs, Bakelite jewelry and designer eveningwear) remains as eclectic as ever. Stop in and snag a unique home accessory, designer bauble or vintage sunglasses as a Magic City memento. (Because no one wants another box of Key lime coconut patties.)

Word on the Street

The Design District continues its gritty-to-glam makeover, with trendsetting Maison Martin Margiela, Celine, Prada and Marni now rubbing shoulders with Cartier, Louis Vuitton and Hermès. With Valentino, Tom Ford, Armani and Fendi set to move in next year, we're relying on Michael Schwarz' cheap and cheerful neighborhood pizzeria, Harry's, to keep our stomachs full as we empty our wallets.

Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon recently escaped the suburban hinterlands of Broward County and is currently ensconced in a high-rise in Miami's burgeoning Biscayne Bay corridor, from which she writes about Caribbean travel, mainlines Cuban coffee and enjoys morning runs along the Venetian Causeway.
