Defense Contractors Win $80 Million More for Tech Contract

The Department of Defense announced eight defense contracts Wednesday worth $198.4 million in aggregate. The largest of these awards was a $80 million contract modification providing additional funding to seven companies for their work on a cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract supporting the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Unique Mission Cell.

Unique Mission Cell (UMC) supports the U.S. Army by identifying, developing, and tailoring new technology to the warfighter's needs. As such, it acts as a sort of "Q" -- in the James Bond sense -- to the Army, helping to outfit units with useful technology. The seven firms assisting UMC under this contract (the value of which has now increased to $480 million) include:

  • Booz Allen Hamilton

  • Exelis

  • Northrop Grumman

  • SAIC

They also include the privately held defense contractors Battelle Memorial Institute, Technical and Project Engineering LLC, and WinTec Arrowmaker.
