The Accelerating Race to Cash In On Disney's Princesses

Apparently Walt Disney hasn't gone far enough in exploiting its famed princesses for financial gain, Fool contributor Tim Beyers says in the following video.

Look at Maleficent. The live-action drama starring Angelina Jolie tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the evil queen of the same name, and comes on the heels of Universal's resounding success with Snow White and the Huntsman last summer.

That film, starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as the warrior who protects her. Huntsman earned $396.6 million worldwide during a 14-week run in theaters, Box Office Mojo reports. A good number since Huntsman cost $170 million to produce.

To be fair, marketing, prints, and advertising probably ate most of the film's gross profit. And yet niche hits can be hard to come by in Hollywood. It's typical for studios to copy a successful formula when it sees one. Maleficent, despite its obvious links to a Disney classic, looks like that sort of attempt, Tim argues.
