Is the RealD Experience Still Relevant?

Thor: The Dark World would have been just as enjoyable in 2-D as 3-D, Fool contributor Tim Beyers says in the following video.

Tim saw the film at an advanced 3D screening to which he brought a pair of clip-on specs for watching in RealD . Unfortunately, the best parts -- especially those in which actor Chris Hemsworth as Thor interacts with Tom Hiddleston as step-brother Loki -- didn't need the embellishment.

Most moviegoers appear to agree. Only 39% of opening weekend receipts for The Dark World were attributable to 3-D, Box Office Mojo reports. Any perceived boost for the format from Gravity didn't find its way to Asgard.

Meanwhile, RealD saw revenue decline 20% in its fiscal second quarter yet lost just $0.09 a share thanks to cost-cutting. Analysts were expecting a $0.19 loss. A fresh round of layoffs amounting to 20% of its workforce could help to offset third-quarter losses and stabilize the business headed into 2014.

Should you buy on the promise of a recovery? Tim answers this question and more in the video. Please watch now and then leave a comment to let us know where you stand.
