Google Sheds Light on Company Barges
Some -- but not much -- of the mystery fogging the purposes of two barges owned by Google has been lifted by the company. A statement the Internet giant's press department sent The Motley Fool reads, in its entirety:
Google Barge ... A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it's still early days and things may change, we're exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology.
Speculation has been rife about the purpose of the structures, following press reports over the past few weeks revealing that the company was the entity behind them. One barge is anchored near the coast of Maine, and the other sits at San Francisco's Treasure Island.
