Forget "Scroogled": Microsoft Is Bingling Users
Microsoft has been gunning for Google lately with its "Scroogled" campaign, highlighting all the ways that Google mines and tracks user data for the benefit of its advertisers. Well, it turns out that Microsoft is preparing to do much the same, and arguably to an even more pervasive level.
Microsoft has added Bing Smart Search to Windows 8.1. While Bing Smart Search is an important improvement that integrates and improves search capabilities in Windows, Microsoft will use this data to pitch ads to users -- much like what Google does. One key difference is that Bing Smart Search will use data from local searches on a user's personal computer.
