Miami-Dade's largest aquaponic lab will open to educate students about urban agriculture; Celebrity chefs will lead discussion on how to innovate in making food accessible to all; Volunteers to assemble 1,000 mobile garden bags for local residents in need

Chef José Andrés to receive Daily Point of Light Award


--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Points of Light, Chase, and Florida International University:

WHAT:

Celebrity chefs José Andrés, Ingrid Hoffmann and Adrianne Calvo will help kick off The Education Effect's Plant it Forward, a unique program that teaches students innovations in food production and preparation, entrepreneurship skills and empowers them to give back to their communities at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in Liberty City. The kick off is part of the 'One America' national volunteer service tour led by Points of Light and Chase that aims to inspire million of Americans to serve their communities. The panel of chefs will discuss sustainable solutions to increasing food accessibility in south Florida, where nearly 950,000 individuals struggle with hunger and 1 in 4 children go to bed hungry according to Feeding South Florida. The Daily Point of Light Award celebrating the commitment of individuals to improving the world will also be presented to José Andrés.

Plant it Forward is an extension of The Education Effect, Florida International University's (FIU) university-community school partnership that was launched in 2011 and is supported by Chase. Through the program, students will manage the largest aquaponics lab in Miami-Dade County, tend to grow boxes, sell their produce at food stands and mobile markets throughout Liberty City and teach cooking and nutrition lessons at schools, churches and community events.
