Tech Teardown: October 9

In today's episode of Tech Teardown, host Erin Kennedy discusses the latest developments in the tech sector with our tech and telecom bureau chief, Evan Niu, CFA.

In recent headlines, Google and Hewlett-Packard have teamed up once again to release the new Chromebook 11, an entry-level device priced at $279. The device looks impressive for an entry-level laptop, and is the latest in a long stream of collaborative efforts between Google and Hewlett-Packard. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer also confirmed recently that its flagship Office productivity suite would eventually come to Apple's iPad, which has major strategic implications for Microsoft's biggest cash cow.

Within the booming Chinese smartphone market, local player Xiaomi has quickly risen the ranks. The small company has used an Amazon.com-esque model of selling hardware at cost with the hopes of profiting later on content and services.

The rumor mill is suggesting that Apple is preparing to launch its new iTunes Radio service in the U.K. and Canada, which could put more pressure on Pandora. Meanwhile, Google could be expanding the horizons of its Hangouts messaging app.
