AT&T to Introduce Fiber Internet to Austin Ahead of Google
Following news in April that Google would bring its lightning-fast broadband fiber connectivity service to Austin, Texas, by mid-2014, AT&T today announced plans to bring its own fiber broadband plan to Austin, beginning in December of this year.
The initial roll-out of AT&T's "U-verse with GigaPower" fiber Internet service will offer connectivity speeds up to 300 megabits per second this December, with upgrades to 1 gigabit per second available to Austin residents by mid-2014, according to AT&T's statement. The U-verse service will include TV connectivity alternatives in addition to what AT&T says will be the fastest broadband connectivity alternative in the area.
Commenting on the decision to bring fiber connectivity to Austin, AT&T-Texas President Dave Nichols said in the release, "With our all-fiber U-verse services, we are building the foundation for a new wave of innovation for Austin's consumers, businesses, and civic and educational institutions."
As with AT&T's fiber alternative, Google Fiber will offer 1 gigabit TV connectivity in addition to Internet services in Austin when it becomes available in the middle of next year.
