Showtime Needs Another Killer

Showtime Needs Another Killer

Is Showtime in trouble? Recent statements from network president David Nevins raise serious questions, says Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video.

Nivens says he wants to keep popular drama Dexter alive via spinoff, which sounds great until you hear Nevins put the eight-year-old show in context. "Arguably, Dexter is to Showtime what Spider-Man is to Sony or Batman is to Warner Bros., so I think it's going to be important for us to keep it alive," Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter recently.

Can you imagine? The Amazing Spider-Man earned more than $750 million at the worldwide box office for Sony. Two of Christopher Nolan's three Batman films grossed more than $1 billion. And Dexter, which just ended after eight seasons for the CBS subsidiary? Michael C. Hall's serial killer at its height drew about 3 million viewers per episode.

What should we make of Nevins' comments and spinoff aspirations? Is it time to short CBS? Tim answers these questions and more in the video. Please click to watch now.
