State of Florida Selects Magellan Complete Care to Launch Plan That Integrates Behavioral/Physical Health Care in Eight Regions

First-in-nation Medicaid plan specifically for individuals with Serious Mental Illness

AVON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As part of the new statewide Medicaid Managed Care program, the state of Florida announced today that Magellan Complete Care of Florida has received notice of contract award to launch a Medicaid specialty health care plan. This plan - the first of its kind in the nation - provides individuals with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) the coordinated physical and mental health care they need to live healthier lives. Magellan Complete Care of Florida's proposals were accepted in eight regions, which include 40 of Florida's 67 counties. Participation is subject to customary contract negotiations, final rates and contract execution. Implementation is expected to be in 2014 according to current state timetables. In June of 2013, Magellan Complete Care of Florida began enrolling members in its Medicaid HMO plan in Broward County.

"We are grateful that the State of Florida has chosen to continue and expand our collaboration, and we look forward to providing exemplary integrated health care on behalf of our new members across the state," said Scott R. Markovich, president of Magellan Complete Care. "For individuals with Serious Mental Illnesses, Magellan Complete Care of Florida's approach will help members navigate the health care system by establishing better access to care and facilitating informed choices to improve their lives."

"Building upon Magellan's historic strength in the behavioral health field, as well as our existing relationships in Florida, Magellan Complete Care's unique model of care will help all better understand the services and support available to them," said Manuel Arisso, chief executive officer of Magellan Complete Care of Florida. "The selection by the state of Florida is an acknowledgement of the way in which our plan approaches total health care, and the importance of integrating both the behavioral and physical health of our members."

Magellan Complete Care's model centers around a Care Coordination Team, which works with members, their doctors, counselors, family, and caregivers to set goals for feeling better and enjoying a healthier life. The Care Coordination Team also includes a dedicated health guide who, when needed, helps by scheduling appointments, arranging transportation to appointments, and assisting with adhering to treatment plans.

While capable of providing quality care to all individuals reliant on Medicaid-funded services, Magellan has expertise, a distinctive model of care, and has developed provider networks that meet the unique needs of individuals with Serious Mental Illness.

"We know that patients receive better care when that care is coordinated, with doctors, specialists and support staff across disciplines talking to one another and sharing information," said Osman Ahmed, M.D., chief medical office of Magellan Complete Care. "In addition, many people coping with Serious Mental Illness or chronic medical conditions rely on family members, caretakers and other community support systems to ensure quality and maintenance of care. Magellan Complete Care recognizes that and approaches integrated health care in a holistic fashion by creating a dedicated and experienced Care Coordination Team to help all of our members."
