Hundreds of Booz Allen Volunteers Join Global Cleanup Movement for "Trash Free Seas"
MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On September 21, hundreds of Booz Allen employees, along with their families and friends, will join the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), a massive, worldwide, annual volunteer effort that protects and improves the health of global waterways and oceans.
Now in its 28th year, the annual ICC, the world's largest volunteer effort to help protect oceans, lakes and rivers, brings together hundreds of thousands of volunteers to remove trash and debris that threatens wildlife, food safety, personal health and local economies. Volunteers track every piece of trash they find and the Ocean Conservancy produces an annual snapshot to highlight the global issue of marine debris. In 2012, more than 550,000 people picked up more than 10 million pounds of trash along nearly 20,000 miles of coastlines.
"The threat of marine debris affects all of us and the work we do," said Gary Rahl Senior Vice President, Booz Allen. "While uncontrollable events such as the 2011 Japan tsunami add to the problem, keeping our waterways trash-free is one of the easiest ways protect future generations. There is no substitute for direct employee involvement in this effort, and initiatives such as the ICC allow our employees to combine technical and management analysis expertise with their love for our beaches, rivers and oceans."
Starting September 21 and throughout October, Booz Allen's volunteers, who represent Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, and communities across the nation, will participate in cleanups throughout the area to remove trash and debris from local waterways. McLean-based Jennifer Curtin, a senior leader of Booz Allen's energy, environment, and infrastructure business, will make opening remarks at the Daingerfield Island event and be joined by several Booz Allen volunteers who will be cleaning up at simultaneous events throughout the DC area including Columbia Island, Fletcher's Cove, and Sully Historic Site.
Rahl continued, "Our volunteers' support of the Ocean Conservancy is a prime example of Booz Allen's commitment to sustainability and stewardship. Whether through volunteerism or client work, the promotion of resource conservation and responsibility is integral to our culture. In addition to our work with the International Coastal Cleanup, we also assist the U.S. EPA's Chesapeake Cleanup Program and the Virginia Voluntary Environmental Excellence Program for Regional Watershed Enhancement's efforts to build more resilient waterways."
Throughout Fiscal Year 2013, 7,100 Booz Allen staff members around the world performed community service, and the firm provided financial support to 545 unique organizations, including the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and the USO. Booz Allen staff have supported Ocean Conservancy events for four years, and in FY2013 participated in 23 international coastal clean-ups and 400 volunteers collecting and removing debris from local waterways.
