Schindler Elevator Corporation Wins Contract to Provide and Install Efficient and Sustainable Mobility Solutions at Hudson Yards in NYC

MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Schindler Elevator Corporation has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by Related Companies to provide and install 32 elevators and four escalators at Hudson Yards South Tower, a 52-story, 1.7 million square-foot commercial office tower to reside at the 26-acre site planned for a new business district in Manhattan's 'New West Side.' Upon completion in 2015, the building is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Designed by Architect Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, the building will be home to anchor tenant Coach, Inc.'s headquarters as well as L'Oreal USA, SAP and Fairway. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design. Tutor Perini Building Corporation is the General Contractor.

Intuitive Technology Provides Personalized Mobility

Moving occupants faster and more efficiently throughout the office tower will be 27 energy-efficient Schindler 7000 custom passenger elevators equipped with Schindler's award-winning PORT Technology destination-dispatching system. The PORT system functions as a two-way communication interface between occupants and the building's environment and optimizes traffic flow throughout the building while offering, predictive call entry and personalized service.

The technology's patented access control uses RFID technology to play a significant role in managing and controlling access within the building. At Hudson Yards South Tower, this technology will allow occupants to use pre-programmed access cards to generate an automatic elevator assignment, allowing advanced access control and customized mobility throughout the building. The system offers a building security system seamlessly integrated with elevator access control at every floor.

Energy Efficient Design

  • Designed with energy efficiency in mind, each terminal's proximity sensor tells it when to be active and at all other times puts it into low energy consumption mode.

  • When the terminal screen illuminates, an ambient light sensor determines only the brightness level required, again optimizing energy usage.

  • The technology also helps ensure elevator trips are as efficient as possible. This produces a very resourceful use of energy even during heavy traffic.

  • Schindler 7000 elevators use highly efficient permanent magnet motors and feature Power Factor 1 drives that reduce energy consumption by up to 35% compared to standard drives and regenerate energy back into the building's electrical system. The recovered energy can be used to power other building demands such as lighting, air conditioning or other equipment. The Power Factor 1 drive generates less heat, providing additional savings through reduced cooling requirements for the machine room.

"The Hudson Yards project is the future of New York City and we are proud to be a part of this transformational venture," said Greg Ergenbright, president,Schindler Elevator Corporation.
