Netflix Launches in Netherlands, Its 41st Country

After announcing in June that it would be expanding into the Netherlands, Netflixofficially launched in the country of 16.8 million today.

The streaming service will be offered for €7.99 per month (approximately $10.60) and marks the 41st country Netflix has entered. Netflix has more than 37 million streaming customers around the world, with about 30 million in the U.S.

Reed Hastings, CEO and co-founder of Netflix, said in a statement, "the Dutch have incredible broadband, but until today have not been able to take full advantage of their fast connections."

According to Netflix, those in the Netherlands will now have access -- for the first time -- to House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, season four of Arrested Development, and Orange is the New Black. In addition, Derek, a new comedy written by and starring British comedian Ricky Gervais, will also be available beginning tomorrow exclusively on Netflix in the Netherlands, according to the company. Dutch customers will also have access to locally made movies and TV shows.

In the company's most recent earning release in July, Hastings drew attention the upcoming launch in the Netherlands and said, "Netherlands is about half the size of Canada, and is a good opportunity for us as we prepare for entry into more markets." For the quarter ending June 30, Netflix saw its international revenues increase by 155% year over year, and its paid members increase 132%. However, it still operated at a net loss of $65 million, not nearly as dramatic as the $89 million loss in the year-ago quarter.
