Nebraska DMV Wins Acclaimed Digital Government Achievement Award for Online Handicap Permits

LINCOLN, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- This week the Center for Digital Government announced that the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has been recognized with a Digital Government Achievement Award (DGAA) for their Nebraska Handicap Parking Permit Application and Management System for medical professionals and permit holders. The DGAA recognizes outstanding agency and department Web sites and projects at the application and infrastructure level. Criteria for the award includes: efficiency and economy, innovation, functionality, performance expectations and collaboration.

"Our commitment to expand the use of technology to make government more efficient is demonstrated with this online service," said Governor Dave Heineman. "This project is representative of the hard work and dedication we embrace in order to improve online government interaction in Nebraska."

Prior to the new service, the outdated process was weighed down by complex legislation and a legacy database resulting in this necessary public service to be a time-consuming, aggravating process for all parties involved. Collaboration between government agencies, support from law makers, and a partnership with Nebraska.gov made it possible to move this process into the digital age and make it as efficient and accessible as possible.

This award-winning DMV service allows applications for handicap parking permits to be submitted electronically, directly to the DMV, by the authorizing medical professional. It also allows permit holders to request additional permits or replacements from the DMV. No paper application, no signatures, no trips to the DMV, and no waiting in line required.

"This online service saves applicants days and even weeks of waiting to receive their permit in the mail. It helps medical professionals efficiently assist their patients and has made it possible for the DMV to eliminate the backlog of applications. This service epitomizes what the Digital Government Achievement Awards looks for in government efficiency and innovation. We are so very proud of this service for Nebraskans," says Rhonda K. Lahm, Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

This service is available on the Nebraska DMV's online services portal, www.clickDMV.ne.gov website which was also a DGAA recognized service in 2011.

The Nebraska Handicap Parking Permit Application and Management System has also been selected by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) as a finalist in the 2013 Recognition Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Information Technology. "I know first-hand how intense the competition is for candidates in this category. State agencies have to show very tangible results in innovation and efficiencies and this service is definitely one of the best in the nation in this category," comments Brenda Decker, Nebraska Chief Information Officer and current NASCIO President. "I am very pleased for the Nebraska DMV and its partner Nebraska.gov."
