Disney Needs to Make This "Star Wars" Rumor a Reality

Walt Disney should give into the rumor mill and release Star Wars: Episode VII on Dec. 15, 2015, Fool contributor Tim Beyers says in the following video.

According to Badass Digest, which cited multiple sources in its story, Disney wants the extra time to make the next Star Wars film. Director J.J. Abrams probably wouldn't mind having a few extra months, even if May 4 -- known each year as "Star Wars Day" -- seems to be the most logical choice.

Trouble with that date is Marvel releases The Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to last summer's $1.5 billion blockbuster, on May 1, 2015. Subsequent months aren't any easier. June brings Terminator 5, while July plays host to a sequel to the cultish 1996 hit Independence Day. Time Warner also has a Batman/Superman team-up planned.

November's schedule includes yet another Marvel film, Ant Man, while Lions Gate closes out The Hunger Games trilogy on Nov. 20, 2015. December is just about Disney's only choice, Tim says.

And it's not necessarily a bad choice. Avatar made its way to theaters in December 2009 and went on to draw the biggest box-office gate of all time. With a winter release, Star Wars: Episode VII has a chance to do nearly as well, Tim says.

Yet as good as Disney looks right now, The Motley Fool's chief investment officer believes he's found an even better buy for the year ahead.
