The past five years have been cruel to Finnish handset maker Nokia and its shareholders. Its shares have lost some 85% of their value in that time. Granted, there was the Great Recession, but Nokia's slowness to adapt to the smartphone revolution was just as large a headwind to the company's performance during this period.

This, of course, is no secret. Nokia's fighting tooth and nail to become relevant again, and it recently might have gotten a new lease on life in its battle again the likes of Apple and Google.
