Netflix Signs Up With The Weinstein Co.
Netflix and The Weinstein Co. have signed a multiyear agreement giving Netflix the exclusive U.S. subscription television license to air Weinstein Co. first-run movies, the companies announced today.
The Weinstein Co. is the producer of the current box office leader, Lee Daniels' The Butler.
Beginning with Weinstein Co.'s 2016 theatrically released titles, Netflix subscribers will be able to stream movies from Weinstein Co. and its Dimension Films on their TV sets, tablets, mobile phones, and computers. Weinstein Co.documentaries and foreign films, including The Artist and Undefeated, are already available on Netflix.
Weinstein Co. owners Harvey and Bob Weinstein "are in a class of their own when it comes to choosing and producing the best films in the world," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in the companies' statement. "We look forward to reinventing the pay TV window with the Weinsteins."
Harvey Weinstein said in the statement that the deal was "probably the biggest deal in the history of The Weinstein Company."
