New online, results-oriented learning system drives student success with custom learning

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American InterContinental University (AIU) has introduced a new adaptive learning platform that has improved classroom success by developing a personalized learning map that enables individual students to skip over what they already know and focus their time on what they need to learn.

"Today's online students are looking for degree programs that fit into their already-busy lifestyle," said Dr. Greg Washington, provost and vice president of campus operations at AIU. "Intellipath offers students a better learning experience by meeting them where they are with a custom learning plan and allowing them to make the most of their learning time."

Intellipath assesses and identifies students' current understanding of a topic and then tailors the type and order of the lessons presented to meet each student's individual needs. The result is a custom learning map built around AIU's powerful, specialized curriculum, with course content students can read, listen to or watch anytime from web-enabled devices. This allows students to focus on subjects they still need to master and skip over material they already know, making better use of their time.

AIU piloted the program in fall 2012 and saw improvement in several key markers of student success in both Math and English courses. For example, average final course scores for AIU students participating in intellipath's adaptive learning pilot increased by 6.8% compared to students in non-adaptive courses. Withdrawal rates decreased 13.6% for students in the intellipath courses compared to those that did not integrate intellipath. Based on the results of the pilot, AIU has moved rapidly to integrate intellipath into additional courses such as Economics, Accounting and History.

With AIU's Intellipath program, students receive:

  • Personalization: Intellipath provides a customized learning map that includes lessons, course material and interactive learning activities tailored to students' knowledge level; intellipath also delivers course material in multiple formats so students can read, listen to or watch content

  • Access anywhere, anytime: All AIU course content is accessible through one login and in one centralized location, making it easy for students to learn on their own time by accessing content anywhere, anytime from any web-enabled device

  • Individualized support: Professors are industry specialists who work collaboratively with students and provide one-on-one support when needed

  • Real-time progress: Students know their grades and where they are on each assignment in real-time throughout the course, allowing them to spend more time on areas where they need additional practice

  • More-efficient learning: intellipath adjusts coursework based on students' current knowledge levels to help them focus on topics where they need additional work and creates a foundational knowledge base to help them to connect the dots between concepts in other courses

More than 4,300 AIU students have already participated in intellipath as expansion of the adaptive learning platform continues across all degree programs offered by the university. More than 30 percent of AIU courses are expected to include intellipath-enabled learning by the end of 2014.

Intellipath also helps faculty focus their instruction. Faculty can see in real-time how students are performing in their coursework as well as the areas in which they need support.

"Adult learners want to feel they are in control of their own learning," says AIU English professor Dr. David Taylor, who has been teaching intellipath courses since October 2012. "Intellipath gives them ultimate learning flexibility and freedom. It diagnoses exactly what the individual needs and provides a learning map exclusive to that individual. Throughout the course, the student is able to spend the time he or she feels is needed. That is mastery learning and independent learning at its best."

Intellipath helps improve upon AIU's already in-depth curriculum, in which students can take more courses devoted to their field of interest, on average, than at other similar schools. More than half of students' courses are focused in their field of study to help prepare them for their career. AIU's intellipath offers courses not just in Math but also in English, Business and Information Technology. All intellipath course content was created for AIU students by AIU's faculty of industry specialists, who bring their real-life experience into the classroom.

AIU offers master's, bachelor's and associates degree programs including business administration, information technology, education and more. In the last 10 years, AIU has graduated more than 80,000 students through its online and ground campuses. Students often return to AIU for second and even third degrees, and in the last 10 years, AIU has awarded more than 120,000 degrees to students through its online and ground campuses.
