Software giant Microsoft has enjoyed healthy gains this year, in part due to optimism around activist investor ValueAct taking a decent stake and now trying to score a board seat. The PC market continues to struggle, and Microsoft has not made much progress with penetrating the tablet market with its Surface products, either.
