Armed with the online aspect, racing games of today have a sizeable number of players who swear by the level of competition that these games provide. In accordance, developers of the current gen have incorporated many new elements in the erstwhile racing games that have changed the face of the gaming industry.

Featured here today are 5 of the top racing games that have been the most popular and the most well received; the ones that have managed to hold their own amidst the vast number of games that are released every year on the PS3.

1. Gran Turismo 5

Developed by Polyphony Digital as a PS3 exclusive, Gran Turismo 5 is a sim racing video game, the fifth game in the Gran Turismo series. The first game in the series to be developed for the PS3, Gran Turismo 5 was released in November 24, 2010 and marks the first entry in the series with online races with support for up to 16 players

The games scores a first in yet another category. It is the first game in the series to provide a damage model. The variations in damage depends upon the vehicle being a 'Premium' or a 'Standard' category car. Both mechanical and external damage model are included which is dependent on the speed and angle of impact. There are a total of 81 tracks and 1083 cars in the game, most of which are replicas of real life cars.

With stress on reality and simulation driving Gran Turismo 5 is one of the most successful games of the PS3. Definitely one to play.

2. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts, Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a racing video game that was released in 2012. The game is the nineteenth title in the Need for Speed series.

Blending the styles of previous Burnout and Need for Speed titles, the game received mostly positive reviews winning many awards in the process. Following its release, the game won the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards for Best Driving Game and was nominated for Best British Game and Best Online Multiplayer at the 2013 BAFTA Awards.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted borrows heavily from the first Most Wanted title of the franchise. The game allows players to choose one car and compete against other racers in three types of events, Sprint Races, Circuit Races and Speed Runs. It also possesses elements the Burnout series and another game from the franchise, Need for Speed: Carbon.

One for the NFS fans and definitely not one to give the miss.
