Oshkosh Wins $14.5 Million MRAP Up-Armor Contract
The war in Afghanistan may be all but over, but the funds needed to pay for it just keep on flowing.
On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced its latest funding for the war effort, awarding armored vehicle maker Oshkosh a firm-fixed-price contract worth $14.5 million to supply the U.S. Army with "A-kits" (extra armor) for mine resistant ambush protected all terrain vehicles, or MRAPs.
In July 2009, the Pentagon named Oshkosh the sole winner of its contract to manufacture off-road MRAPs, designated M-ATVs. Weighing nearly 14 tons each, but featuring Oshkosh's TAK-4 independent suspension system, Oshkosh M-ATVs can travel offroad, where other MRAPs, built by other companies, cannot.
To date, Oshkosh is known to have built in excess of 4,500 M-ATVs, most of which are in service in Afghanistan.
