Actuate Announces Three Winners in its Latest "Plug-in 2 BIRT" Open Source Development Competition

Entries showcase the breadth of knowledge in the BIRT developer community that's more than 2.5 million developer members strong

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Actuate Corporation (NAS: BIRT) , The BIRT Company - delivering more insights to more people than all BI companies combined, is pleased to announce the three winners of its latest "Plug-in 2 BIRT" development competition. Open to BIRT developers around the world, the semi-annual event gives new and experienced developers working with the BIRT IDE a chance to impress their peers on BIRT-Exchange.org while competing for prizes.

Actuate Corporation - co-founder and continued sponsor of the open source Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) Project, the most widely adopted analytics IDE in the world - supports a growing developer community more than 2.5 million strong. The Plug-in 2 BIRT competition challenges these developers to create plug-ins that further enhance BIRT's capabilities and create added value for fellow open source developers using or exploring the IDE, while extending BIRT's overall usability.

"Besides celebrating and recognizing the talented developers using BIRT worldwide, Plug-in 2 BIRT is Actuate's way of encouraging some fun competition while accomplishing the goal of sharing code and knowledge far beyond what we can contribute ourselves, to further add to the breadth of development options available to every BIRT user," said Ray Gans, BIRT Community Manager at Actuate. "It's always exciting to see the wealth of entries we get every six months. This time, choosing the winners was even more difficult than usual - we had a number of particularly great new plug-ins that we know will prove very useful to the BIRT community at large."

Every one of the Plug-in 2 BIRT entries will be available for download and free usage on Actuate's BIRT Exchange DevShare. For the first time in the contest history, entrants were also asked to publish the source codes for their plug-ins, which will allow their fellow developers the opportunity to create further additions and improvements to the submitted plug-ins.

The Plug-in 2 BIRT Winners

The three latest "Plug in 2 BIRT" winning submissions and their creators are:

  • Subhas Bhat, a software engineer who submitted the "BIRT JDBC Emitter." The plug-in uses JDBC drivers to export the contents of any BIRT report table into a pre-defined relational database table.

  • Chandramohan Nagaraj, a Java and Oracle developer working as a senior development specialist. His entry was the "MongoDB Data Extraction Plug-in", which extends the Data Extraction extension in the current BIRT Engine.

  • Ramesh Sivanesan, is a technical anchor who entered with the "Organization Chart Plug-in for BIRT". This plug-in allows users to design and generate a BIRT report for any hierarchical data in a tree format.

"This is the second time I have participated in the contest," said winner Subhas Bhat. "Last time I had developed an ODA plug-in, so this time I wanted to try some other extension point of BIRT. I chose [the] JDBC Emitter, as exporting table results of any report to a database would be useful."

Actuate has awarded each winner a prize of a 4thgeneration iPad (32 GB with Wi-Fi). For more information on the winning entries, visit:
