With the PS3 as the platform, we have seen a multitude of open world games which have never failed to amaze us. The open world games are the most played and longest running games among all genres because of the availability of various time killing methods fostered by the open world setting.

1. Skyrim

Developed by Bethesda, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a role playing action open world game that was released on November 11, 2011. The game is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls series of games.

The story line of Skyrim revolves around the player who is tasked with defeating Alduin, a dragon prophesied to destroy the world. The setting of the game is 200 years after the previous installment in the series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The tradition of the previous games in the series is continued by Skyrim, as the game allows the player to postpone the main storyline indefinitely by travelling to any part of the world at any given time.

The game met with critical and commercial success, shipping over 7 million copies in the first week of release. The game and the series in general attained mass popularity by imbibing the non-linear gameplay tradition. One of the most successful open world games to grace the PS3 and definitely one to play on the PS3.

2. GTA IV


Arguably the best open world game of this generation and a fodder for many a debates, Grand Theft Auto IV is an open world action adventure game developed by Rockstar. The game was released for PlayStation 3 on 29 April, 2008.

The game is set in the fictional Liberty City, which bases itself heavily on New York City. The game follows the adventures of Nico Bellic, who is in search for the 'American Dream' but gets himself into a world of crime. GTA IV features open world gameplay and derives its elements from driving games and third person shooters. The game attracted mass appeal due to the overwhelming popularity of the previous games in the series. GTA IV broke industry records with sales of around 3.6 million units on its first day of release and grossing more than $500 million in revenue in the first week.

Be it story-wise or gameplay-wise, GTA IV is a gem of a game, one to be reckoned with. Definitely one to try on the PS3.

3. Saints Row: The Third


Saints Row: The Third is an action adventure open world video game published by THQ and developed by Volition, Inc. It is the third title in the Saints Row series, a sequel to the 2008 Saints Row 2.

The third installment in the Saints Row series retains the trademark gameplay aspect of open world and urban warfare. The player controls the character of the leader of the Third Street Saints as they battle it out with three gangs in the fictional city of Steelport. The element of insanity finds prominence in the game as the over the top humor elements are scattered abundantly.

The game was mostly well received by critics and fans who praised it's intriguing gameplay and quirky humor. The game shipped over 4 million copies till date. Don't give this one a miss.
