Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas addressed the graduates saying, "You have come here today through a non-traditional path. You have demonstrated by not just your words, but your deeds, your willingness to accomplish something important by a completely different approach. We need folks in the legal profession that are willing to fix the representation gap by looking at the problem and come up with wholly new solutions..... We need members in our profession that are not afraid to lift the two most powerful tools in a lawyer's arsenal -- a simple pencil and a piece of paper -- and couple that with the ability to represent someone who needs representation in court. I challenge you in every aspect of your legal career, regardless of what it looks like, to be innovative, be creative, serve the law, but mostly, make yourself available to assist those citizens that need justice. We all depend on you doing just that." At the end of the ceremony, he swore into the California Bar two Concord graduates who recently passed the exam.

Concord Law School Dean Greg Brandes, JD, who conferred the degrees, said, "As we celebrate our 20th graduating class, Concord Law School continues to be a leader in education innovation. Since the beginning, our programs have helped career-focused learners achieve their personal and professional goals."

Several students were recognized for awards at the ceremony. Award winners included Reem Samir Allos, Rhonda Jean Povich, and Sharon Ann DeBenedetti who all were awarded the Kaplan Award for Legal Services. The award recognizes a graduate who has demonstrated excellence in professionalism and exemplary community service. Maxine A. Laurence-Wurtz won the EJD Award for Academic Excellence. F. Burak Evrenosoglu received the Jack R. Goetz Award for Academic Excellence, which is named after the University's founding dean and recognizing a graduate of the JD class who achieved the highest cumulative grade point average. The Sue Lane Award, given in memory of Concord Law School's first registrar and honoring one student from the graduating class who embodies a strong work ethic, compassionate nature and service to the community, was given to Steven Pierce.
