Tennessee Online Tax Filings Soar

The Tennessee Department of Revenue sees increases in online filings with no additional cost to the state or tax payers.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Commissioner Roberts's initiative to push taxpayers to file online is gaining momentum. The result is increasing efficiency for agencies and improving customer service for taxpayers. The greatest increase in filings can be seen in the professional privilege tax and sales tax submissions.

The professional privilege tax online application allows professionals to pay an occupation tax for having an active license or registration. By requiring filers to complete submissions online there has been a significant savings in the manual labor costs within the Department of Revenue. In 2013 online individual filings have increased 269 percent compared to 2012 filings. Companies filing for multiple individuals can also utilize the online batch application and filings are up 66 percent for the year.

Also, the online sales and use tax application provides business owners a convenient way to pay their sales tax online. The sales tax application has seen steady increase of use over the last decade, and had its largest monthly filing to date in January 2013 with 82,647 submissions processed. This is an increase of about 23 percent from 2012.

The recent directives to have all filings submitted electronically have saved cost, time and improved data integrity. The Department of Revenue securely processed over $5 billion in online filings for the 2013 Fiscal Year and a new milestone was hit as 1 million filings were processed in a single year across all available online systems.

The Professional Privilege Tax and Sales and Use Tax applications were developed by NIC, Inc., Tennessee's eGovernment partner since 2000.
