Columbus Zoo and COSI Columbus Lead Service Discussion as Powerful Voices
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- At Ohio State University today, Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, teamed up with JPMorgan Chase, and volunteers from the John Glenn School of Public Affairs Student Association and HandsOn Central Ohio to commence a year-long, nationwide service tour called One America.
"The promise and potential of volunteer service can help us overcome some of the greatest challenges we face today - including improving access to education, alleviating hunger, and preserving and protecting our environment," said Delores Morton, President of Programs, Points of Light. "Representing one of the most active service communities in the nation, the people of Columbus will help us set the bar high and demonstrate the real impact One America can have in communities."
The event marked the official opening of registration for the 2nd annual Columbus Volunteer Challenge, coming to the city September 7 - 11. The Columbus Volunteer Challenge, co-sponsored by HandsOn Central Ohio and designed to create a more engaged community through volunteerism, will engage 20,000 volunteers throughout the city over the five-day period.
In addition, nonprofit leaders Philip Pikelny, Chairperson of the Columbus Zoological Park Association Board and David Chesebrough, President and CEO of COSI Columbus served as the tour's first pair of powerful voices calling for unity through service, leading a group of volunteers in making vegetable seed balls for the Franklin Park Conservatory's 'Growing to Green' program.
"We're ecstatic that the Buckeye state is the first stop on the tour," said Chase market president Jim Malz. "The One America campaign is all about uniting people in service and that's a great way to kick off the first day of registration for the Columbus Volunteer Challenge. Service is one way we can use our collective strength to make a difference - and JPMorgan Chase is proud to join Points of Light to bring people together for One America."
The One America campaign is a 9-city tour that will run through 2014 to bring powerful voices and unlikely pairs in politics, entertainment, and sports together with the goal of inspiring Americans to unite in service for their communities throughout the year. In each tour city, the campaign will unite hundreds at a service event and also issue a call to action for tens of thousands to make a tacit commitment to service.
