EMERGING APPAREL DESIGNERS COMPETE FOR AVERY DENNISON AWARD AT WGSN GLOBAL FASHION AWARDS 2013

Finalists for €12,000 Emerging Fashion Brand Award Announced

WGSN announced four emerging apparel designers as finalists for the Avery Dennison Emerging Fashion Brand Award, to be awarded in October at the 2013 WGSN Global Fashion Awards (GFA). The award, sponsored by Avery Dennison Retail Branding and Information Solutions (RBIS), supports the advancement of emerging apparel designers from around the world by giving contestants the opportunity to showcase their branded fashion collection and marketing vision. The submissions were judged by an international jury comprised of prominent fashion designers, opinion leaders and journalists. The winner will receive €12,000.

As a global leader in sustainable packaging, labelling, embellishment and branding solutions, Avery Dennison RBIS is committed to advancing the developing careers of emerging apparel and footwear designers, giving them the inspiration and the tools to design, brand and market their products to tell compelling stories and improve consumer appeal.

"We have the opportunity to work with design teams from some of the world's largest apparel brands and retailers, and showcase our unique ability to expand and enable creative brand storytelling," explained Tracy Van Hoven, vice president, Global Marketing Communications, Avery Dennison RBIS. "Branding is such a vital part of the fashion industry and we are excited to see how these talented emerging designers integrate our unique branding solutions into their collection to enable the successful storytelling from concept through retail to marketing activation."

The finalists were chosen from a pool of more than 200 entries by an international jury of 50 prominent fashion designers, opinion leaders and journalists, and announced at a party hosted by singer and GFA judge Kate Nash on July 22 at St. Martins Lane Hotel in London. Judges considered not only the independent designer's collection branding, but also their collective brand vision, from the website to marketing. The finalist found to have the most coherent and creative vision will win the award.

The Avery Dennison Emerging Fashion Brand Award finalists are:

  • Jacob Birge of Jacob Birge Vision, a forward thinking fashion brand, specialising in high-end, modern womenswear and accessories

  • Jane Bowler of Jane Bowler, a fashion and accessories brand that transforms inexpensive, mundane and often recycled materials using unique processes

  • Angelys Balek of Angelys Balek, a contemporary women's apparel brand that empowers women to freely celebrate their individualism and confident self-expression

  • Emma Shipley of Emma J Shipley, a luxury label specialising in fine drawing, luxury scarves and interior textiles

"Parlaying hard-earned recognition on the catwalk into a successful brand with longevity is the biggest challenge facing designers," says Tim Voegele-Downing, global creative director, Avery Dennison RBIS. "The entries were phenomenal; the finalists created inspired fashion collections and truly understand the importance of product branding."

The winner of the Avery Dennison Emerging Fashion Brand Award will be announced on October 30, 2013 at an awards ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
