MtronPTI Increases Design Margin for Network Timing Designers

Stratum 3 compliant TCXO offers increased stability and lower noise

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- MtronPTI, leader in precision frequency control and custom RF/microwave filters, today announced the M615x Series Stratum 3 TCXO/VCTCXO for Ethernet switch and router applications. Mel Mehret, data communications application engineer, says, "Stratum 3 network timing compliance is required for reliable data transmission among servers but it's not enough. To achieve the promise of LTE connect speeds, the network that connects servers needs to be more efficient. The M615x Series TCXO fully meets Stratum 3 requirements but also lowers close-in phase noise, offering design margin to switch and router makers which can translate into a lower bit error rate for higher effective bandwidth."

TeleGeography's Global Internet Geography research reports that total Internet bandwidth grew from about 30 Tbps (terabits per second) in 2009 to approaching 90 Tbps in 2012. Although the growth rate has slowed as more users come online, the annual bandwidth growth rate is expected to be above 30% per year in the near term.

Mel continues, "Usable bandwidth depends on many factors, one of which is maintaining good quality data links between servers. If the timing systems drift or have too much wander, packets get dropped forcing retransmission and adding overhead while the hardware re-syncs. Major switch and router makers already depend on MtronPTI Stratum 3 qualified TCXOs like the M610x Series today to keep these links running. With the new M615x Series designers get the advantage of lower phase noise, increasing their design margin for other system effects. In addition, the M615x's timing holdover specification includes hysteresis effects, something others avoid talking about or don't specify."

The lesson: to help carriers get the most out of LTE and increase installed equipment efficiency, designers need to look closely at the sources of dropped packets. Reducing noise and increasing stability in the Stratum 3 reference clock timing board is a good place to start. The M615x goes beyond Stratum 3 minimums to offer just that.

The M615x Stratum 3 TCXO/VCTCXO is available immediately from 8 MHz to 38.88 MHz. Fully Stratum 3 qualified, the M615x series offers 0.34 ppm (peak-to-peak) holdover stability for twenty four hours over -40 °C to +85 °C, -156 dBc/Hz typical phase noise at 100 kHz offset, and about 5 dB to 6 dB lower low-frequency phase noise compared to alternative solutions. The M615x Series fits a wide range of applications wherever high stability/low noise clock sources are required; examples include: SONET/SDH, synchronous Ethernet slave clocks, bench and automated test equipment.
