Pentagon Awards 17 Contracts, Worth $1.3 Billion, on Tuesday

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded multiple contractors shares in some 17 contracts Tuesday, valued at up to $1.3 billion in combined dollar value. Most of the funds awarded went to a series of 13 contractors working on a single cyber-defense project -- but there were a few other winners. Among them:

  • Science Applications International won $10.2 million when the Military Sealift Command, or MSC, exercised an option to requisition services in support of MSC's information technology ashore operations. SAIC will assist MSC's command, control, communications, and computer systems in merging MSC's manifold IT assets into some sort of coherent whole. They have until next July to complete this task.

  • The Ordnance and Tactical Systems unit at General Dynamics was awarded an $8.5 million contract modification to supply the U.S. Army with 20mm MK244-0 armor piercing, discarding Sabot cartridges. These are the same rounds fired by the U.S. Navy's Phalanx Anti-Ship Missile Defense System, for example.

  • Exelis won a firm-fixed-price, foreign military sales contract worth up to $7.6 million to supply night-vision goggles to the Canadian military.

  • Rockwell Collins' Simulation and Training Solutions unit won a different firm-fixed-price, foreign military sales contract worth up to $22.2 million. This one calls on Rockwell Collins to supply transportable Black Hawk helicopter simulator training devices to the government of Saudi Arabia (which has recently been buying the helos from United Technologies ).
