Yum! Brands Beats Expectations But Takes A Step Back Anyway
Yum! Brands (NYS: YUM) reported earnings on July 10. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended June 15 (Q2), Yum! Brands met expectations on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue dropped. Non-GAAP earnings per share contracted significantly. GAAP earnings per share shrank.

Yum! Brands logged revenue of $2.90 billion. The 19 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ foresaw revenue of $2.93 billion on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 8.3% lower than the prior-year quarter's $3.17 billion.

EPS came in at $0.56. The 23 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated $0.54 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.56 for Q2 were 16% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.67 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.61 for Q2 were 12% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.69 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 24.3%, 100 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 12.5%, 250 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 9.7%, 70 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $3.58 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.95.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $13.48 billion. The average EPS estimate is $3.07.
