B&W Applauds NNSA Sites Selected by R&D Magazine for 2013 R&D 100 Awards
CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Three National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) sites where The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYS: BWC) operates have been selected as recipients of R&D Magazine's 2013 R&D 100 Awards. The R&D 100 Awards recognize and celebrate the top 100 technology products of the year and span industry, academia, and government-sponsored research.
Sites honored include the Y-12 National Security Complex, where Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Y-12, LLC is the prime contractor, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where B&W serves as a member of the management and operating team.

Y-12 was honored for its development of the LISe™ high-efficiency thermal neutron detector, which is the first large, single-crystal semiconductor of high resistivity that contains lithium and directly detects thermal neutrons with high efficiency. The device will be used in handheld nuclear nonproliferation and homeland security applications to find fissile materials. B&W Y-12 senior development chemist Ashley Stowe was part of the LISe development team.
LLNL was recognized for four innovative developments: a new material that can be used to diagnose airflow patterns and problems in both indoor and outdoor venues; efficient mode-converters for high-power fiber amplifiers; technology to increase the operational flexibility and efficiency of the National Ignition Facility, the world's largest laser; and a new imaging technique used to observe material and biological processes in action at a nanoscale level of detail.
LANL was recognized for three innovations: a self-contained, battery powered, digital x-ray imaging system; a nuclear fission electrical generation system for space probes and spacecraft; and a scanning device used to detect nuclear and radiological threats and explosives.
LLNL and LANL also were jointly recognized for a software suite for the performance of new computing environments, developed in conjunction with Sandia National Laboratory.
