Annual awards showcase operational excellence for coal-fired generation plants

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Navigant (NYS: NCI) today announced the recipients of the Generation Knowledge Service® Plant Operational Excellence Awards. The awards, based on data available to Navigant through its proprietary Generation Knowledge Service® (GKS®) data base, represent coal-fired plants that have best demonstrated excellence in cost and operational management over the most recent five year period (2008-2012).

The awards are based on detailed analysis of client-provided cost, performance and safety data from Navigant's industry-leading GKS® database, which contains data for more than seventy percent of the U.S. electric utility generation coal fleet—representing more than 216,000 MWs of generation and more than 640 coal-fired units. The analysis of cost and performance includes a weighted comparison of non-fuel operation and maintenance costs and availability/reliability measures during the five year evaluation period. Award winners must also demonstrate safety performance in the top half of their respective comparison groups.

"Over the past five years, there has been tremendous change in the generation industry, both in terms of challenges and opportunities. For many plants, improving performance and reducing costs can mean the difference between being successfully dispatched in the market or facing a ''mothball'' or ''shutdown'' status. Utilizing the GKS® database, subscribers have been able to set realistic targets and chart a course to successfully meet those goals," said Dale Probasco, Managing Director at Navigant. "These top performing plants have not only found ways to meet their performance goals efficiently and safely, but have also managed to increase their value in the market during the past five years. This is no easy task when today's generation plants face ever-increasing environmental regulations and lower natural gas prices."

Eligible coal plants were divided into three classes for evaluation purposes, based on the average unit size. The top and runner up plants for each category are:

>500 MW Average Unit Size Range (Large Unit Category)

  • Top Performer: Plant Scherer - Southern Company

  • Runner Up: Plant Wansley - Southern Company

201 - 500 MW Average Unit Size Range (Medium Unit Category)

  • Top Performer: Gallatin Plant - Tennessee Valley Authority

  • Runner Up: Allen Steam Station - Duke Energy

<200 MW Average Unit Size Range (Small Unit Category)
