Expect Significant Electric Transmission Congestion into Southern California for Summer 2013, According to ICF International
ICF Pulse Newsletter Finds Conditions Are Right to Create a Challenge to the System
FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- ICF International (NAS: ICFI) , a leading provider of consulting services and technology solutions to government and commercial clients, projects significant transmission congestion into Southern California for summer 2013 in its latest Pulse newsletter, which discusses new data on transmission issues for Southern California power markets.
Among the highlights contained in the June 2013 issue of Pulse:
Transmission congestion - ICF projects significant electric transmission congestion into Southern California for the months of July and August.
SONGS Issue - System generator capacity will be greatly impacted as a result of the retirement of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station units.
Demand - With summer temperature predictions higher than average and a recovering economy, peak demand is expected to be 1.6 percent higher than 2012.
Natural gas prices - After normalizing for the effect of higher natural gas prices, ICF projects wholesale power prices that are on average 19 percent higher than prices in summer 2012.
Price divergence within state - Transmission limitations on Path 26 (a set of three SCE 500 kV power lines extending from Northern to Southern California) and Path 46 (a set of high-voltage alternating-current transmission lines in southeast California and parts of Nevada) will likely cause power prices to diverge between Northern and Southern California.
Dampening prices - The repowering of El Segundo, California, which is expected to be in service by August 1, 2013, could offset the impacts listed above and dampen prices in August.
