Cypress's PSoC®3 Device Powers Intuitive Touchpad In KORG's New KAOSS Music Creation Products

Trademark Flexibility of PSoC Architecture Enables Integration of Multiple Functions, Including Industry-Leading CapSense®Capacitive Touch Sensing

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NAS: CY) today announced that KORG Inc. has selected the PSoC® 3 programmable system-on-chip for its new line of KAOSS PAD handheld synthesizer products. The KORG kaossilator 2 and mini kaoss pad 2 give users the artistic freedom to combine multiple layers of digital music with intuitive touchpad and slider controls powered by PSoC 3. In addition to touch control, the flexibility and versatility of the PSoC architecture enables the one-chip PSoC 3 solution to implement voltage sequencing and signal conversion for the displays of the KAOSS products - integrating the functions of three devices from the previous generation of products.

Both the kaossilator 2 synthesizer and mini kaoss pad 2 leverage Cypress's industry-leading CapSense® capacitive touch technology to implement the ultra-fast responsiveness of the touchpad and slider, improving upon the performance of the resistive touch controls in KORG's previous generation of products. PSoC 3's programmable digital logic drives the signal converter of the products' superb Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) displays while freeing up their central processing units (CPUs) for optimal performance. More information on utilizing PSoC 3 as a capacitive touch sensing USB Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) controller is available at www.cypress.com/go/cy8ckit-033.

"The kaossilator 2 and mini kaoss pad 2 combine the world's best capacitive touch sensing technology and most popular synthesizer, delivering the accuracy and responsiveness musicians demand to create digital music wherever and whenever they want," said Masato Mizuno, Product Leader of new line of KAOSS at KORG INC. "And with PSoC 3's flexibility, we were able to solve multiple design challenges to significantly improve the performance and aesthetics of these dynamic synthesizers."

"KORG's KAOSS line builds on the success that the Apple iPhone and iPad have had in redefining how musicians create and interact with music," said Leon Tan, marketing manager for Cypress's consumer solutions. "We're pleased to have KORG leverage PSoC 3's best-in-class capacitive touch controls, plus its ability to handle numerous other functions to reduce component count, to bring these innovative synthesizers to market."

About CapSense

Cypress's CapSense touch-sensing solutions have replaced over 4 billion mechanical buttons in mobile handsets, laptops, consumer electronics, white goods, automotive applications, and virtually any system that has a mechanical button or switch, making Cypress the industry touch-sensing leader. The CapSense portfolio, the industry's broadest and most integrated, enhances industrial design and reliability with the most noise-immune and water tolerant capacitive touch-sensing interfaces, including proximity sensing where direct touch is not required. CapSense proximity sensing provides power savings by activating an interface only when needed while further enhancing industrial designs by only exposing interfaces when necessary. MCUs Can't. PSoC Can.

PSoC solutions bring the flash-based equivalent of a field-programmable ASIC to embedded designs without lead-time or NRE penalties. PSoC integrates configurable analog and digital circuits with an on-chip microcontroller, reducing component count and simplifying revisions. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions, accelerating cycle time and improving quality while reducing board space, power consumption, and system cost.

PSoC "future-proofs" designs, protecting them against last-minute specifications changes. It enables firmware-based changes at any point in the design cycle—even out in the field. All PSoC devices are dynamically reconfigurable, enabling designers to transform resources on-the-fly and to execute tasks with fewer ICs. For more information, please visit www.cypress.com/psoc.
